Questions & Answers1. What certifications do I need to be a High Sierra Lifeguard?High Sierra uses American Red Cross as their certification provider. Lifeguards need two certifications: Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. 2. Do I have to be certified before I interview for the job?No. If you are offered a position and are not yet certified, the offer of employment will be conditional upon you receiving this certification. In fact, we recommend interviewing and getting the job offer first, just to ensure you have the position lined up. 3. Where can I get certified?High Sierra has American Red Cross instructors on staff, and offers classes in the spring, as well as periodically throughout the year. Sierra’s classes are based in their office and nearby pool locations in Arlington, Virginia. Click here for our current course availability. Your local American Red Cross chapter may also offer Lifeguarding courses. 4. If I worked for Sierra last summer, do I need to reapply?Yes. Applicants applying for reemployment must complete a new application each year. If offered a position again, they will also need to complete other updated employment paperwork such as tax forms before beginning work. Many applicants who have previously worked for Sierra will not need to re-interview. 5. How long does the interview take?An interview generally lasts 15-20 minutes. Applicants who choose to complete an application in person rather than online are welcome to do so; this will add approximately 10 minutes. 6. Who can be a lifeguard? You must be at least 15 years of age to be eligible to attend Red Cross training. Sierra is seeking qualified applicants to fill our positions and is an equal opportunity employer. 7. Where are Sierra’s pools located?High Sierra has properties in Maryland, Virginia and DC as well as New York State, New Jersey and Massachusetts. For more information or to find out if we have openings at a local pool near you, please contact our Human Resources department. 8. How many hours will I work?It varies based on your work location and our operating needs. Some locations have only 1 shift, but others may have an opening and closing shift. Guards may be asked to work at other nearby pool locations other than their primary location during peak times or based on business needs. 9. How do I schedule an interview? Please submit an online application and you will be contacted by our Human Resources department to arrange an interview time. Or call our office at 703.920.1750 to schedule an appointment. Our office hours are 9am – 6pm Monday through Friday and 10am – 5pm on Saturdays.
